Porch theft: Trends and prevention ahead of the holidays

The data is eye-opening. As noted in the 2025 Package Theft Report from Security.org, package thieves swiped $8.2 billion in online purchases in 2025. All told, one in four Americans has had a package pilfered at some point in their lives.

Porch pirates are definitely still a problem, most of all during the holidays, but there’s no reason you need to be a victim. Explore how a layered strategy and modern smart home security can keep your parcels secure in Gaithersburg.

Layered security keeps Gaithersburg porch pirates away

Holidays are already a challenge with travel delays, scheduling conflicts, budgets stretched to the limit, and in-laws who test your nerves. The last thing you need is a missing delivery to push you over the edge. So, how can you stop it taking place? Installing a doorbell camera is a solid first step, but there’s more to the puzzle of preventing package theft.

A layered approach can include:

• Security cameras covering your home’s border. Let prowlers know they’re being watched.
• Home security signs. It’s simple but still a powerful deterrent.
• Motion-activated lights. A sudden burst of light is usually enough to send thieves away. Just remember, porch theft occurs at any time of day.
• Connecting with your neighbors. It’s not just about the security tech you own. Neighbors can keep an eye out for each other and take note of suspicious behavior.

Today’s tech strengthens your protection

Home security keeps evolving. You can use these advancements to help prevent porch theft at your Gaithersburg home. Consider the following options:

• Video doorbells with two-way audio. Tell delivery people where to leave packages or find out why someone’s at your door.
• Smart locks and automation. Today’s home security systems can be operated from wherever you are. Unlock your front door or open your garage, tell the courier put deliveries inside, and then secure the entrance when they’re done.
• Cameras with active deterrence. You can now find doorbell and exterior cameras that trigger a light display or audible alerts if someone gets too close.

Make good delivery choices

A layered approach and modern tech will help prevent package theft, but you can also stay a step ahead by making smarter delivery decisions. To illustrate:

• Require a signature. This is a wise choice, particularly for more expensive items. Your packages will never be left unattended.
• Give instructions. Let drivers know where you would like parcels placed and keep them hidden from view.
• Redirect packages. Ship higher-value deliveries to an alternate location, like your office or a secure pickup locker. Carriers like Amazon provide secure lockers in Gaithersburg where you can grab your orders.
